Nigerian Health Minister Says N1.9billion ‘Ebola Fund’ Will Be Used To Buy New Cars

Amidst angry reactions trailing the unavailability of the N1.9 billion released by President Goodluck Jonathan for the management of Ebola, the Health Minister, Onyebuchi Chukwu, has denied the money was for the management of the virus. Mr. Chukwu’s denial came Tuesday despite an official statement from the federal government to the contrary.

On August 8, at the peak of the Ebola crisis, the president, in a press release signed by Reuban Abati, announced the release of N1.9 billion as a Special Intervention Fund for the management of Ebola.

“President Jonathan also approved a Special Intervention Plan and the immediate release of N1. 9 billion for its implementation, to further strengthen on-going steps to contain the virus such as the establishment of additional isolation centres, case management, contact tracing, deployment of additional personnel, screening at borders, and the procurement of required items and facilities.

“The President commends the vigilance of aviation and health authorities in Lagos who identified and isolated the index case in Nigeria, the late Patrick Sawyer, an American-Liberian who flew into the country,” the statement read.

On Tuesday, however, Mr. Chukwu denied that the money was released for the management of Ebola. The Minister of Health said the money was approved for the Ministry of Health.

“The N1.9billion approved by the president was for the federal ministry of health. It is not for Ebola fund. It will be used to procure more vehicles for working which have been ordered. It would be used to procure more drugs that have been ordered…and other items.

“In the case of Lagos state, after the president met commissioners of health, the president then asked the minister of health to discuss with the technical people and money has been approved for Lagos state,” he said.

He further stated that though the world is at risk, the federal ministry of health is ready to face any outbreak.

“Excellence is a journey, it’s never a destination. The federal ministry of health is ready to face any outbreak.

“Every country and every citizen of the world remains at risk but Nigeria is on top of the situation so we don’t want people to panic. We should be in charge but not panic” he said.

The Lagos State government had complained that it did not receive the funds released for the management of Ebola despite being the epicentre of the management of the infection in the country.

Chairman, Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, Dr. Ngozi Olejeme Sunday opened up on her governorship ambition, stressing that she has the backing of God to be the governor of Delta State in 2015.

Speaking to journalists, Sunday, in ward 5, Unit 10, St Brigid’s Girls Grammar School, Umuaji, Asaba, shortly after collecting her Permanent Voter’s Card, Olejeme who is also banking on her knowledge of the state and ability to build bridges across the different ethnic groups in the state, urged the people to be wise and courageous in their choice.  “I have done what the nation wants me to do by coming down. I have submitted my old voter’s card. This will bring me victory in 2015” she said.

On her chances of becoming the next governor of the state, Olejeme said they were very bright. “By the grace of God, I will be the next governor of Delta State. This is the era of women. God said women must rule in 2015”

Olejeme said she had acquired enough political structures to enable her become the next governor of Delta State.

On the issue of patriarchy in the country’s politics, Olejeme said “I am not afraid of the number of men in the governorship race. Women are getting extremely important and much more aware and active across the whole of Delta State. Their vote will count, my vote will count as well as the vote of other Deltans” she declared.

Olejeme praises Uduaghan

“I must thank His Excellency, Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan for a job well. I will bring my wealth of experience to bear in the administration and development of Delta State. I will also take Delta State to the next level” she promised.

Olejeme, who spoke in Asaba during a courtesy visit on a member of the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Pat Ajudua, described herself as a sellable candidate that will give the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) victory in the 2015 governorship election in the State.

Olejeme who also spoke on the moribund nature of the National Social Insurance Trust Fund in 2009, the number of workers then and social security issues in Nigeria, said NSITF would employ 6000 Nigerians before the end of 2014.

Praising God and the management team for the progress so far made, Olejeme said the organization under her leadership transited from its moribund nature to a desired state.

“Today, NSITF is having almost 6500 staff with offices in different parts of Nigeria”. She said the agency would continue to provide social security protection and safety nets for all Nigerians against deprivations and income insecurity.

Continuing on the achievements of NSITF, Olejeme said “The Fund has commenced the process of putting in place the necessary infrastructure to implement Social Security Benefit to the aged, unemployed, child welfare and the physically challenged. NSITF has also commenced putting in place the necessary infrastructure to ensure the collection of data of all the categories of those entitled to Social Security Benefit”.

“A bill for an amendment to the provisions of the NSITF Act to provide basic social security services to all Nigerians is before the National Assembly for passage into law” she disclosed . She commended Princess Ajudia for her courage. Earlier, Princess Ajudua praised Olejeme for joining the governor

Aziza served Nigeria with integrity – Olejeme

The death of Major Gen. Patrick Aziza (Rtd) has deprived Nigerians, particularly Deltans of the services of one of the most consistent administrators of this age, says Dr. Ngozi Olejeme.

“Aziza in his life career served Nigeria with distinction and integrity. He was a family man that radiated the best of family values and a public official whose wealth was measured from the indelible legacies he put in place for posterity” she said.

Olejeme who also described the death of Gen. Aziza as sad and painful, noted that the military officer proved to Nigerians and the international community that there was everything to gain from being principled.

A statement by the Deputy Director General, U and I Foundation, Barrister Raymos  Guanah urged the younger generation of Nigerians to take a cue from the ideals that Aziza lived for- building a better Urhobo nation, Delta State and Nigeria.

“In Nigeria, Aziza stood out. He was a rare gem, a distinguished military officer, a community leader, an apostle of the enthronement of the rule of law and a visionary leader with the knack for identifying talents. As a military administrator, he brought together bright young men and women, some of whom are today in top leadership position in the country. As a minister, he demonstrated exceptional administrative prowess.

She urged Aziza’s immediate family and the Urhobo people at home and abroad to take solace in the belief that God’s will is unquestionable and must always prevail,”

“She prays that God Almighty will comfort them all and grant the late leader’s soul peaceful repose,” Guanah stated.
